ENERGY AND PEAK SUPPLY: SEPARATING THE SIGNAL FROM THE NOISE

OPINION

In this edition we analyze the energy and peak supply situation for 2021 using detailed and realistic simulations of system operation for scenarios that are severe, but plausible. The objective is to separate the “noise” of speculations from the “signal” of actual energy and peak supply conditions.

REGULATORY

In this section, we comment on the Decree that regulates the contracting of capacity reserves and the Ordinance draft in public consultation, which establishes the guidelines for holding the first auction of this type and other relevant topics.

WATER RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT

The objective of this month's environmental section is to draw attention to the opportunities and challenges (institutional and even legal) to move forward with the integrated management of water resources in Brazil, considering both the importance of hydroelectricity for the security of supply, especially in the period of drought, like other uses of water.

INTERNATIONAL

In this month's international section, we comment on the “Net Zero by 2050” report recently published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) that outlines the paths to zero CO2 emissions in the global energy sector by 2050.

INNOVATION

In this section, we present the use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) to construct houses and buildings, which is a very promising solution to the problem of emissions from the cement and steel sectors, which is particularly adapted to Brazilian conditions.
