CAPACITY AUCTIONS: HYDROELECTRIC PLANTS OUT OF THE GAME?

OPINION

In this editorial, we analyzed a possible threat to the participation of existing hydroelectric plants repowering, modernization, and expansion projects in the announced capacity reserve auction, adjustments to the current regulation, and the expected economic benefits, if they can participate.

REGULATORY

In this section, we comment on ANEEL's actions to mitigate the impacts on Supply Tariffs and other relevant issues that moved during the month.

WATER RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT

In this section, we discuss the case of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant, which has been a controversial project since the beginning of its environmental licensing, notably for diverting the waters of the Xingu River through channels and reservoirs to a powerhouse for the production of energy.

INTERNATIONAL

This section presents the functioning of the European Common Energy Market, which consists of a Day-Ahead Market and an Intraday Market. The creation of this common market is a great success for coordination between operators and regulators from different countries and serves as a reference for possible applications in other regions, such as Latin America.

INNOVATION

This section comments on the cryptocurrency mining activity, used to ensure the integrity of the information in the decentralized digital registry known as “blockchain”.

STRUCTURAL SUPPLY ANALYSIS

It presents the updated balance of demand and structural energy supply for the coming years and our traditional delay meter.
