DO LOOK UP! USING SATELLITES AND A.I. FOR THE WATER-ENERGY-FOOD NEXUS

OPINION

In this editorial, we show the benefits of satellites that, with various sensors, can help understand how water is used in watersheds. These analyzes are part of an R&D project that sought to assess the impact of consumptive uses of water on the “Energy Reallocation Mechanism” (MRE).

REGULATORY

In this section, we comment on (i) the guidelines for valuing MMGD's costs and benefits, (ii) the improvement of the regulation related to TUST and TUSDg, and other relevant topics.

JURIDICAL

This month, guests Alexandre Leite and Henrique de Mattia from Cescon Barrieu bring an article discussing the possibility of contracts for purchasing and selling energy in Brazil indexed to dollars.

WATER RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT

In this section, we comment on initiatives that aim to promote environmental and economic benefits from rivers and those related to the production and storage of hydroelectric energy.

INTERNATIONAL

This month's international section looks at the crisis that, since the second half of 2021, has brought risks to the energy supply of several countries and what we can expect going forward.

INNOVATION

With the current grain shortage resulting from the invasion of Ukraine, in this section, we comment on the use of energy in food production and the relation between electricity, nitrogen, and photosynthesis.

STRUCTURAL SUPPLY ANALYSIS

We present the updated demand and structural energy supply balance for the coming years and our traditional "delay meter".
