HERA is a software that supports the development of hydropower and pumped storage projects. It evaluates the hydropower potential of river basins, considering project economic feasibility, as well as social and environmental impacts. HERA contributes to the stakeholder decision process, which is complex as it usually involves conflicting interests, trying to balance energy production with conservation.

The optimization process is formulated as a non-linear, integer, stochastic mathematical problem. Its objective is the selection of the hydropower and PSH projects to develop, considering also other benefits to the electrical grid, such as the integration of variable renewable energy sources and socioenvironmental restrictions.

Geoprocessing capabilities

In order to accurately simulate the design of hydropower and PSH projects, HERA uses Digital Terrain Models, geological and hydrological information.

HERA overlaps socio-environmental and infrastructure layers and reservoir flooded areas to define related costs and constraints. For each site, different alternatives can be assessed by varying the hydraulic head and engineering layouts. A plant scheme of each project with estimated costs can be visualized.

Integrating renewable resources into power grids

Conventional hydropower and pumped storage projects are essential for integrating Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) sources into power grids, as they significantly enhance grid flexibility. This is why HERA is designed to integrate seamlessly with the expansion planning tool OptGen and the dispatch planning tool SDDP. HERA generates hydro candidates that can be selected by OptGen and operated in detail by SDDP, providing a comprehensive solution for efficient energy management.
