The Technical Note “Análisis de costo-beneficio de escenarios de transición energia para la descarbonización del sector energía y transporte a 2050 en Panamá” (Cost-benefit analysis of energy transition scenarios for the decarbonization of the energy and transport sector to 2050 in Panama), which included the participation of researchers Silvio Binato and Luana Gaspar from PSR, has been published in the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Library.

The study presents a new integrated analysis methodology that combines energy planning with robust decisions in the face of multiple uncertainties—such as technological costs, regulation, demand, and market evolution—allowing for the evaluation of costs and benefits associated with different energy transition and decarbonization trajectories up to 2050.

Applied with the collaboration of relevant institutional actors, the methodology revealed that more ambitious decarbonization strategies can generate positive net benefits for Panama. Among the main results are the reduction of long-term energy costs, diversification of the electricity mix, stimulation of innovation, and strengthening of sustainable infrastructure.

In addition to economic gains, the transition to clean energy sources also brings environmental and social benefits, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, increased energy security, the generation of skilled jobs, and improved quality of life.

The study’s results offer valuable technical input for the design of public policies and investment strategies aimed at reducing emissions and improving the resilience of energy systems in Latin America and the Caribbean.
