PSR participated in the IEEE PES General Meeting 2026—the IEEE Power & Energy Society’s premier technical gathering, held in Montreal, Canada—by presenting research and methodologies focused on topics that drive the evolution of power systems, such as artificial intelligence, expansion planning, market mechanisms, and reliability assessment.
Throughout the event, PSR CEO Luiz Barroso and Head of Analytical Tools Ricardo Perez participated in panels and technical sessions. They shared studies developed with the support of the company’s research teams and discussed key challenges facing the sector.
Highlights included discussions on resource adequacy mechanisms and capacity market design, analyzing experiences from countries such as United States, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil to guarantee investments in systems with a high share of renewable sources and increasingly lower marginal costs. Presentations also addressed the roles of energy storage, demand response, and long-term markets in maintaining power system reliability.
Another topic presented was a new approach to generation and transmission expansion planning that accounts for the location of large, loads, such as data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence. The methodology developed by PSR allows these loads to be incorporated directly into optimization models, simultaneously evaluating infrastructure investments, operating costs, and the benefits of demand flexibility.
The evolution of artificial intelligence applications for the power sector was also part of the agenda. “Participating in the IEEE PES General Meeting is an opportunity to share research findings with experts from around the world and contribute to some of the most relevant discussions regarding the future of power systems. It is precisely at moments like this that we can learn from different markets and strengthen the development of methodologies capable of addressing challenges such as the energy transition,” says Barroso.
For Ricardo Perez, the company’s presence at the event also demonstrates how applied research and innovation go hand in hand at PSR. “The current challenges facing the power sector demand new ways of combining mathematical modeling, artificial intelligence, and specialized expertise. During the 2025 edition of the event, Luiz Barroso was honored with the IEEE Power & Energy Society’s Leadership in Power Award, presented to global leaders for exceptional contributions to the development of the energy sector. On this occasion, the IEEE highlighted the executive’s leadership and contributions in the fields of research, public policy, markets, and regulation.
