The new phase of the Brazilian Electric Power Sector Coalition was launched in August with the 1st Convergence Forum, held at PSR’s offices in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting brought together representatives from various segments of the sector to discuss the priorities intended to guide the Coalition in the coming months.
Led by CEBDS and coordinated by PSR, the initiative builds upon work carried out in 2025, which gathered over 70 stakeholders and identified more than 50 levers across the Generation, Transmission, Distribution, and Consumption pillars. The proposal now seeks to advance the implementation of recommendations developed during the first phase, while broadening the scope to include opportunities for integration between the electric power sector and other sectors of the economy.
A highlight of the meeting was the definition of strategic themes to be explored in greater depth during this new phase. The selected themes were: electrification, price signals and subsidy rationalization, flexible resources, and resilience.
For Angela Gomes, Technical Director at PSR and one of the project’s strategic leads, the meeting marks a significant shift in the Coalition’s trajectory. “We currently face major challenges, such as over R$ 50 billion in annual subsidies and price signals that do not closely align with supply costs. However, we certainly possess enormous potential for transformation by 2050 through the electrification of other sectors—delivering economic, social, and environmental benefits to the country and reducing emissions by up to 190 MtCO₂. The Coalition exists so that we can address existing challenges and collaboratively create the conditions for these transformations to occur sustainably,” Angela stated.
The Forum also opened a discussion regarding the Coalition’s engagement and dissemination strategies. Planned deliverables include, among others, four workshops on strategic themes, briefing notes, electric sector indicator dashboards, and extensive mobilization efforts.
Representatives from institutions such as Abradee, Abiape, Abrace, Abeeólica, Abrage, BCG, CEBDS, Axia, Engie, EDP, the Climate and Society Institute (iCS), and Gesel/UFRJ participated in the meeting.
