Luiz Barroso, CEO of PSR, has been honored with the Leadership in Power Award by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES). This award annually recognizes global industry leaders for outstanding contributions to advancing electrical engineering and its transformative role in the energy sector with significant societal impact.

The official citation of IEEE recognizes Luiz for leadership in power and energy systems through research, policy, markets, and regulatory contributions.

Barroso was selected through a highly competitive process involving candidates from around the world, nominated by global energy sector leaders. The selection is supported by recommendation letters that emphasize the impact of each nominee’s work in promoting a more resilient and sustainable energy system.

“It is a privilege to receive this award, which celebrates significant progress across various areas of the energy industry—an industry that is complex and rapidly evolving—and recognizes those who lead and contribute to its transformation,” said Luiz Barroso.

Barroso added that receiving recognition from international peers is especially rewarding for his efforts to help shape the energy sector through a multidisciplinary approach involving engineering, mathematics, economics, and technology—and, most importantly, through educating and inspiring the next generation. “This award also reflects the excellence of Brazilian universities and the invaluable foundation of knowledge I gained at PSR and the Instituto de Investigación Tecnológica at Comillas University in Madrid. Their leaders and teams have played a key role in shaping my career, professional ethics, and values.”

The award will be formally presented during the traditional gala dinner held at the IEEE PES General Meeting in Austin, Texas.

Brief bio:

Luiz Barroso is the CEO of PSR and a research associate at the Instituto de Investigación Tecnológica at Comillas University in Madrid, Spain. He is the former president of Brazil’s Energy Research Office (EPE) and has served as a visiting expert at the International Energy Agency. His career spans energy systems planning, operation, and economics, with professional experience in over 40 countries. In 2010, he received the IEEE PES Outstanding Young Engineer Award and, in 2019, was named an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to regulation, market fundamentals, and energy market design. He holds a bachelor’s and a PhD in Applied Mathematics.
