The increase in the share of intermittent renewable sources, within the scope of the energy transition, carries with it the challenge of implementing flexibility resources in transmission networks, a topic that has been extensively studied by PSR.

The subject was the focus of a presentation by Ricardo Perez, team leader of the PSR models area, at the IEEE PES General Meeting in the USA, the main IEEE event of the year. The presentation was aimed at an audience composed of planners, operators and international energy generation and transmission companies.

In Ricardo’s words, each technology is a piece of the “puzzle” in the energy transition and decarbonization process. Flexibility resources for the transmission network include FACTS, batteries, Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) and flexibility aggregators. These features allow for greater power flow control and greater operating control to accommodate different dispatch scenarios. By taking them into consideration, the proposed planning scheme allows the economic evaluation of transmission flexibility, considered vital for the high penetration of intermittent renewables.

The presentation, which had the support of Amanda Fernandes, Julia Spiegel, Gabriel Provenzano, Maynara Aredes and Joaquim Dias Garcia, is available here.

At the same event, Luana Gaspar, head of Decarbonization and ESG at PSR, presented the scenario of the green hydrogen market in Brazil.
