Rio de Janeiro, February 19, 2021 – PSR is proud to announce that Mario Veiga Pereira, our founder and current Chief Innovation Officer, has just been elected to the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The NAE and the National Academies of Medicine and Science form the core of the American research and teaching system. They were created over time based on a Congressional Act signed by President Lincoln in 1863. The election to NAE is one of the highest honors in the field of engineering, as it recognizes pioneering contributions worldwide. The Academy currently has 2,355 members, of which only five are Brazilian. Mario Pereira is also an elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences; the National Academy of Engineering; Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE); and received the Presidential Medal of Rio Branco and the Medal of Scientific Merit for contributions to science, technology and engineering in Brazil and abroad. He has a BSc in electrical engineering and MSc and DSc degrees in systems and computer engineering, all obtained from Brazilian institutions.

For José Luiz Alquéres, former president of Eletrobrás and Vice President of the World Energy Council, “NAE’s welcome of Mario is fully justified due to the enormous contribution he made to the progress of engineering, planning and improving decision making in the energy sector in Brazil and abroad, in addition to his leadership in training the most qualified professionals ”. Jerson Kelman, Professor at COPPE-UFRJ and former General Director of the National Water Agency (ANA) and the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), comments: “Mario is a few years younger than me. Despite this, it was from him that I learned the most relevant things I know about the electricity sector. Much of what is used worldwide to model complex systems is due to his contributions. NAE’s deserved tribute fills all of us Brazilian engineers with pride”.

For Luiz Barroso, CEO of PSR, “Mario has always extended the boundaries of analytical modeling, with great dedication, humility and strategic vision. His numerous contributions to the planning and operation of electrical systems have benefited Brazil and many dozens of countries for decades. For the nearly one hundred PSR professionals he trained, advises and guides on a daily basis, this recognition is a pride and a source of inspiration.”
